Social proof

We take cues from what other people say and do.

01 What it is

A collection of responses suggests many people share the same worry or goal. Seeing others mention it makes the worry feel more common, and the ad creates a sense of community around the problem.

It can be quieter than a review count. A question and an answer in the same ad imply two voices: someone asking, and someone who has found a product they use. That small exchange can feel more social than a standard product claim.

Proof is only as good as its source. A number from a survey of existing customers is a different kind of claim from a study of people in general.

02 How to spot it

Other people’s voices inside the ad: replies, ratings, a count, a friend recommending it.

03 What it leans on

Social proof, as described by Robert Cialdini in Influence (1984).
